From a Humble Beginning to a City Favourite

Back in August 1998, what began as a shared love for cooking and experimenting in our home kitchen turned into something much bigger: The birth of Checkers. At a time when Chinese cuisine was just making waves in Nagpur, we saw an opportunity to introduce bold flavours to a city that craved something new. With just a handful of recipes and a lot of passion, we opened our doors. Our Chinese menu quickly became a local favourite. People came not just for the food, but for the experience, a place where quality, warmth, and innovation came together on every plate. It was more than a meal; it was a feeling.

One of the most beloved chapters of our story is the introduction of our iconic coffee machine, sourced all the way from Delhi. This machine didn’t just make coffee; it made moments. From first dates and college chats to late-night catch-ups and solo coffee breaks, our coffee has been a part of millions of memories, and it continues to bring people together, one cup at a time. Today, decades later, Checkers remains rooted in the same values: great food, genuine service, and a love for creating spaces that feel like home and hence our iconic tagline, “We have seen generations here”

Suresh Shivdasani, born in 1972 in Delhi, is the founder of Checkers, a brand he launched in 1998 with a vision to introduce bold, exciting flavours to Nagpur at a time when Chinese cuisine was just beginning to gain popularity in the city. Driven by a lifelong passion for food and cooking and inspired by his interests in photography and travel, Suresh started the venture with humble beginnings and a strong commitment to quality.

He believes that great food should be simple, honest, and accessible to all, rooted in discipline, consistency, and care. For him, every meal served is more than just food; it's a moment of comfort, joy, and connection. From the kitchen to the counter, his values of passion, integrity, and attention to detail shape every aspect of the dining experience. His goal is to offer guests an experience that is satisfying, effortless, and memorable, where every visit is marked by freshly prepared food, warm service, and the dependable taste that keeps customers coming back.
